Eggs priced at 72 a dozen after abrupt retail hike

RANCHI: First it was potatoes, then onions and milk added holes to the pocket of common people in the city and now even eggs are no longer a part of everyday staple. The local traders have increased the price of eggs by Rs 12 per dozen and twelve eggs now costs Rs 72 here.
However there is no change in the wholesale rates nor there is any decrease in supply from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, the two major egg-supplying states.Eggs are still available at Rs 133 per carton of 30. Providing further details about this issue, V K Singh, manager of K D a private poultry at Old H B Road said on Monday, "We have not increased the price of eggs for long and also there is ample supply from states like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. If local traders increase the price then people should question them."
City-based local trader Bhanu Singh said, "Consumption of eggs increases during the winters and this is our time to earn profit. We also have to pay transportation cost and run our family expenditure. So we have increased the price. It will surely burn holes into pockets but people should also understand our condition."
Homemakers are finding it very difficult to run the household expenditure owing to sudden increase in the price of essential commodities. Sunita Sinha from Kadru said, "Things are really turning bad and in last few months a price of the essential commodities have increased but our salary remains the same. It's getting tough for us to cook even the basic food for our family. The government should look into this matter seriously and deal with it."
No government's official went on record to take any responsibility when informed about this issue and referred to another department for solution.
